Carbon3.ai

In 2026 Carbon3.ai has proposed redeveloping the former Octel Bromine Works site at Amlwch Port, Anglesey, into a modern AI data center and computing facility. The 61-acre brownfield site, abandoned since 2004, was acquired freehold by the company in November 2025, aligning with the UK Government’s designation of North Wales as a national AI Growth Zone. This venture aims to create secure, sovereign AI infrastructure powered by renewables, leveraging the site’s industrial zoning and Freeport tax incentives.

Carbon3.ai, a UK-based AI solutions platform, completed the purchase from previous owners linked to Anglesey LNG (Canatxx remnants). The timing coincides with Anglesey Freeport’s North Anglesey Tax Site designation, including the Octel plot alongside Rhosgoch and ex-Shell sites, offering customs and tax reliefs to attract tech investment. Co-founder Mick McNeil highlighted the site’s position in the AI Growth Zone corridor, enabling “scalable, renewable-powered capacity” for enterprise, research, and public sector AI needs.

Plans submitted to Isle of Anglesey County Council seek full change-of-use consent for existing structures, transforming them into a “high-quality, energy-efficient AI Centre” with modular data halls and technical plant.
